Kalonzo Musyoka Appointed New Leader of Azimio la Umoja Coalition as Top Leadership Reshuffle Takes Effect

In a significant development in Kenya’s political landscape, Kalonzo Musyoka has officially been named the leader of the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition, following a major reshuffle of the coalition’s top leadership. The announcement comes as the coalition seeks to reposition itself ahead of the country’s evolving political dynamics.

The leadership changes were ratified during a joint meeting of Azimio’s governing organs held on Monday, February 2, 2026. Minutes from the meeting, along with resolutions approving the appointment of new officials and statutory form PP7 detailing the leadership changes, were submitted to the Registrar of Political Parties. A formal letter dated February 2, 2026, was also addressed to Hon. Junet Mohamed, notifying him of his removal from the position of Secretary General.

In the reshuffle, Suba MP Carol Omondi has been confirmed as the new Secretary General, replacing Junet Mohamed, who previously held the post. The coalition described these changes as part of a broader strategy to strengthen organizational cohesion and enhance operational efficiency.

“These changes are part of a deliberate effort to reposition and revitalize the coalition,” Azimio la Umoja stated following the meeting. “Our goal is to foster greater cohesion, effectiveness, and unity as we advance our agenda for the nation.”

The Registrar of Political Parties, through CEO J.C. Lorionokou, acknowledged receipt of the documents and advised that the coalition publish the leadership changes in accordance with Section 20 of the Political Parties Act, Cap. 7D, which governs the notification and publication of changes in party leadership.

The elevation of Kalonzo Musyoka, a veteran politician and Wiper Democratic Party leader, is seen as a strategic move aimed at providing the coalition with experienced leadership and a clearer sense of direction. Analysts note that Kalonzo’s extensive experience in previous coalitions will be invaluable as Azimio navigates an increasingly competitive political environment.

The timing of these leadership changes is notable. The National Liberal Party (NLP), a founding member of the Azimio coalition, recently petitioned the Registrar of Political Parties seeking clarity on the coalition’s current status. Additionally, the reshuffle comes in the wake of the resignation of the coalition’s Executive Director, Raphael Tuju, highlighting a period of transition and renewal within the party.

Political commentators suggest that the appointment of Kalonzo Musyoka and the restructuring of the top leadership are intended to consolidate the coalition ahead of upcoming political contests, strengthen internal unity, and present a more focused and strategic front to the electorate.

As the coalition implements these changes, all eyes will be on how the new leadership navigates the complex political landscape, rebuilds trust among coalition partners, and positions itself for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
