ODM Signals Possible Political Realignment Ahead of 2027 General Election

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has signalled a potential political realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election after resolving to initiate structured pre-election negotiations with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

In a statement issued following a Central Committee meeting held in Kilifi County on January 12, 2026, ODM announced that it had resolved to begin talks with various political formations, starting with UDA. The party said its leadership has been mandated to formally commence the negotiations while simultaneously engaging party members through consultations that will culminate in a National Delegates Convention.

The planned alliance talks form part of wider resolutions adopted during the Kilifi meeting, where the party reviewed its political, organisational and strategic position. ODM noted that preparations for the 2027 elections must start immediately, directing party organs to begin structured work aimed not only at contesting the polls but also at forming the next government. This process will include policy development, strengthening party structures, coalition-building and candidate preparedness.

During the meeting, ODM also reviewed its recent electoral performance and expressed satisfaction with its showing in the November 2025 by-elections. The party fielded candidates in Ugunja, Magarini and Kasipul constituencies and won all three seats, which it said demonstrated sustained voter confidence in ODM candidates.

The Central Committee further reflected on ODM’s 20th anniversary celebrations, noting that the events attracted wide national participation and reinforced the party’s historical role in Kenya’s democratic struggles, advocacy for social justice and promotion of inclusive governance.

On matters of governance and accountability, ODM reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding with UDA, with particular focus on compensation for victims of public protests. The party noted that courts had declared a proposed panel on compensation for victims of demonstrations unlawful and resolved that any compensation funds should be channelled through constitutionally and legally recognised institutions, specifically the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

The committee also received a briefing on the party’s compliance with the Political Parties Act. ODM said it had received a favourable report from the Auditor-General and had been commended for maintaining clean financial records. The party added that it is among the few political parties found to be fully compliant by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

ODM said relevant party organs have been directed to implement the resolutions adopted in Kilifi and to regularly report progress to the appropriate leadership structures.
