IEBC Opens Applications for Trainers, Presiding Officers, and Clerks Ahead of February By-Elections

IEBC has opened applications for temporary election officials to support the upcoming by-elections scheduled for February 26.

In a public notice, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission invited qualified Kenyans to apply online for the positions of Support Electoral Trainers (SETs), Presiding Officers, Deputy Presiding Officers, and Polling/Counting Clerks. Applications must be submitted through the IEBC recruitment portal at https://jobs.iebc.or.ke by Monday, January 26, 2026.

Support Electoral Trainers will play a key role in preparing presiding officers, deputy presiding officers, and clerks for polling, counting, and tallying processes. Their duties include conducting and supervising training sessions, managing training venues, preparing reports, distributing election materials, and ensuring full implementation of IEBC training plans. Successful SETs will earn Sh2,000 per day.

Applicants for the SET positions must be Kenyan citizens of high integrity, non-partisan, computer literate, and holders of a diploma or degree. They must reside within the constituency or ward where they wish to serve and demonstrate strong training, leadership, and teamwork skills.

Presiding Officers will be responsible for managing polling stations, including station layout, security coordination, use of KIEMS kits, voter flow, and transmission of results. They will also oversee all polling staff and officially open polling stations on election day.

Deputy Presiding Officers will assist Presiding Officers in carrying out these duties. Both POs and DPOs must be Kenyan citizens of integrity, non-partisan, diploma or degree holders, computer literate, and effective communicators capable of handling sensitive election materials. They must also reside within their areas of deployment and be available throughout the election period. Presiding Officers will be paid Sh2,000 per day, while Deputy Presiding Officers will receive Sh1,800 daily.

Polling and Counting Clerks will support the organisation of polling and counting centres, manage voter queues, verify voter details, issue ballot papers, and assist in vote counting. Applicants must be Kenyan citizens of good character, have attained at least a C- grade in KCSE, and reside in the constituency or ward where they apply to serve. Clerks will earn Sh1,000 per day.

IEBC emphasized that all applicants must strictly meet the stated requirements and be available for the full duration of the by-election process.

The Commission noted that the recruitment of temporary election officials is essential to ensuring free, fair, transparent, and credible by-elections, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening Kenya’s electoral process.
